This is book is about Harriet Powers who learned to sew and quilt and as a young slave on a Georgia plantation. She is living through the Civil War and Reconstruction and eventually owned a cotton farm with her family.
While doing this she relies on her skills with the needle to help clothe and feed her children and family.Later on she begins to make pictorial quilts, using each square to represent a Bible story and local legend. She exhibited her quilts at local fairs, and never traveled outside of Georgia.
This book gives us a great insight into a person whose life was so interesting and showed her creations through her patchwork quilts. It is amazing how through these quilts she is telling us the story of life and love that she shared. It is a wonderful book to share with children.
